The “Tides and Waves” of Your Business

Before we give credit to your Facebook ads or TV campaigns, we must understand what would have happened anyway.

The Trend & Seasonality Decomposition chart strips away all marketing activity to reveal the “natural physics” of your business. It separates the underlying health of your brand from the predictable cycles of the calendar.

Think of it as a weather report for your revenue:

  • Trend: The Climate (Is the planet getting warmer or cooler?)
  • Seasonality: The Weather (Is it winter or summer?)

How to Read the Lines

This chart isolates two distinct non-marketing forces:

1. The Trend Line (The “Current”)

  • Visual: Usually the top line (Teal/Blue in the chart). It moves slowly and steadily.
  • What it represents: This is your Baseline Health. It captures the long-term combined effect of your brand reputation, the general economy, and your organic growth.
  • The Insight:
    • Rising Line: Your business is naturally growing. Your marketing is working with a tailwind.
    • Falling Line: Your business is naturally shrinking. Your marketing is working hard just to fight the current.

2. The Seasonality Line (The “Waves”)

  • Visual: The oscillating line (Purple). It waves up and down, often dipping below zero.
  • What it represents: The recurring impact of the calendar—holidays, weather, weekends, or paydays.
  • The Insight:
    • Peaks (Above Zero): These are your “High Seasons” (e.g., Black Friday, Christmas). The market is naturally giving you free sales.
    • Troughs (Below Zero): These are your “Low Seasons” (e.g., the post-holiday slump). During these times, the calendar is actively subtracting sales from your potential.

Strategic Analysis for the Pilot

Why does this chart matter for your budget?

  1. Don’t Confuse “Season” with “Success”: If you see a massive spike in sales in December, check this chart. If the Seasonality line spikes at the exact same time, your ads didn’t necessarily perform a miracle—Christmas did. The model protects you from over-crediting paid media for natural events.
  2. Spotting Brand Erosion: If your total sales are flat, but your Trend line is pointing down, it’s a warning sign. It means you are relying heavily on short-term paid spikes to hide a long-term decline in organic demand.
  3. Timing Your Push: Use the Seasonality waves to plan your “Flighting.”
    • Aggressive Strategy: Spend heavily just before the peak to capture the rising wave.
    • Defensive Strategy: Pull back spend during the deep troughs when the market simply isn’t buying, regardless of how good your ads are.
