The “Free” (or Lost) Wins

Not every spike in sales is due to your brilliant ad copy, and not every dip is a failure of strategy. Sometimes, it’s just Christmas. Or Easter. Or Bank Holiday Monday.

The Holiday Impact Decomposition chart isolates the specific revenue impact of calendar events. Unlike the “Seasonality” chart (which shows smooth, rolling waves of demand), this chart shows the sharp, immediate shocks caused by specific national or regional holidays.

How to Read the Chart

  • The Bars (Discrete Events): Unlike other charts in MMM Pilot that use continuous lines, this chart uses separate bars. This is because holidays are specific moments in time, not a constant state.
  • The Zero Line (The Baseline): The horizontal line at €0 represents a “normal” day.
  • Positive Bars (The Boost):
    • Visual: Bars shooting upwards.
    • Meaning: These holidays naturally drive customers to buy. (e.g., Black Friday for e-commerce, Mother’s Day for florists).
    • Insight: This is “wind in your sails.”
  • Negative Bars (The Drag):
    • Visual: Bars dropping downwards.
    • Meaning: These holidays stop people from buying.
    • Insight: This is common in B2B (where offices close for Thanksgiving) or physical retail (where shops are legally required to close).

Why the AI Splits This Out

During the “Project Setup” phase, MMM Pilot automatically identified holidays based on your selected Country.

It separates this data so you don’t make two dangerous mistakes:

  1. False Confidence: Thinking your ads drove a massive spike in November, when it was actually just Black Friday demand.
  2. False Panic: Thinking your strategy failed in late December, when actually your B2B clients were simply on vacation.

Strategic Analysis for the Pilot

1. Validate the Model Use this chart as a “sanity check.” Does it match your reality?

  • Example: If you are an e-commerce brand and the model shows a negative bar for Cyber Monday, something is wrong with the data. The model should reflect your business truth.

2. Optimize Your Flighting (Timing)

  • For Positive Holidays: Align your budget to capture the peak. The market is buying; make sure you are visible.
  • For Negative Holidays: Save your money. If the historical data proves that Labor Day kills your conversion rate (negative bar), turn off your high-cost campaigns for that 48-hour window.
